Census of animals in reserves of Acre helps combat camera traps in hunting region recorded hundreds of animals in the Amazon. Goal is to demarcate area for effective protection of wild animals.
Camera traps installed within the extractive reserve Tarauacá Alto, Acre, logged more than 1,500 animals that live in the Amazon rainforest, and 908 are mammals of medium and large size of 22 different species - some endangered.
The photos are part of the first census of animals inhabitants that researchers from the Federal University of Acre (UFAC) and the research group on traditional communities of Chico Mendes Institute (ICMBio) held in place with the objective of evaluating the creation of a protected area actions such as deforestation and poaching that threaten the biodiversity of the region.
According Rosenil Dias de Oliveira, coordinator of the "subsistence hunting" project, the reserve one can find species like red deer, red-ounce, besides tapirs, inhabitants giant anteaters and jaguars (the last three at risk of disappearing from nature).
Scientific research, which is ongoing, analyzes the impact of subsistence hunting of 348 families living inside the reserve, and want to better understand how people use these Amazonian animals for medicinal purposes.
